Yes, the is the VW thread, isn't it? I have a black 2001 Golf 1.8T (4-door, manual trans), which I bought new, and now has 85,000 miles on it. It's still stock, except for the momo shift knob, DIY clear side markers, and rear de-badging. I drive it into the triple digits every weekday. It's a very nice platform (GTI, A3, S3, TT), though mine would benefit greatly from a stiffer suspension.

The shifter throws are pretty long, but they're not horrible, except for 5th gear. Alp, have you looked into the TT short-shifter mod? The last time I looked, the part was like $40, and you don't have to cut your shift lever.

I disagree on the roomy interior. It's roomy as long as everyone stays in one position, and doesn't feel like moving their legs. But then, only my kids ride in the back seat. Still, the interior has a lot more class than do many other small-car interiors; it's definitely not economy-grade.

Edit: I forgot to mention my aftermarket tires. The stock tires sucked, and I can't believe it when I see someone moving at 90mph on stock rubber.

Manual GTI 1.8T...:drool. But they really need to starting turbocharging the 6 cylinders. >:-(

TT short-shifter mod? You mean, like just a shorter shift lever? That's cool, but I want an actual short shifter. I bet it's a bitch to put one in though because of how different the lever is, with pushing it in and all. Probably the first mod I'll do to the car is an intake and thicker tires. The VR6 sounds awesome, so I might get a whole exhaust system (not a ricer muffler :heh).

DJD, you might want a boost controller man. The stock turbos pump out such low psi, they up the horse by like 15hp. I'd trade in my 174hp VR6 for the 155hp 1.8T just to have an already turbo'ed engine. Then up the boost and have that wonderful spool sound. :drool

edit: DJD, about the roomy interior... My last car was a 2-door Honda Civic. :)

The 'TT short shifter' is actually a piece of shift linkage. You keep using the stock shift lever, but the throws are supposedly identical to the TT's throws. The part number is somewhere on the vwvortex forums, and it can be ordered through dealerships (it's Audi OEM).

I'll finally be able to get a full suspension next year, and I'll do that with brakes before I increase boost. Safety first, right? Besides, I don't mind downshifting to pass. When the time comes, I'll get an APR chip, and be done with it. 195hp + 250 lb-ft for $500.

Yeah, the older civics were small inside. I see your point.

Damn you turbochargers and your inexpensive horsepower and torque upgrades.

I'll look into that SS. :)

I just went out to my car during lunch, and I noticed fog inside one of the headlight enclosures. I love my extended warranty.

Hey, doesn't anyone else here drive a vehicle?

Fog on the inside right? Same thing on both my headlights. Wow, that's weird.

And yea, is everyone else here ashamed of their car, underage, or has no social life?

Yes, fog on the inside. This is the first time that it's happened, and I'm not pleased. Another recent development is that the window controls sometimes work backwards. So do the power mirror controls. Ahh, VW. At least the engine and transmission are what I wanted them to be.

Regarding your comments on reversing, I remember the first time I had to shift into reverse in this car. I was like "..uh...how..uh...f..." then I spent a few minutes looking through the owner's manual. I didn't think of pushing down.

Is your interior grey/black, or tan/black? The photo is a bit off-colour.

What do you like about leather? I prefer cloth, you dont stick to them, they're quieter and they dont amplify cold/hot temperature.

Fuck VW golfs. They're the most useless fuckin cars ever made. They have absolutely no fucking boot room, meaning if you've gotta get up to Gatwick airport with three cases have fun sitting with one inbetween you in the back seat.
Oh yeah the back seats of a VW Golf re fucking tiny and there's NO Legroom AT ALL.
The only place you can take VW Golfs too is a liscenced VW garage because nowhere has the parts and even when you take it to this specialised garage they don't have the parts either and you're waiting three days for the garage to get them in.

Seriously, the sooner we get rid of that hunk of shit for an Eios the fuckin better >:/

hopefully soon we can trade this one in for a 2007 or maybe get 2 of em. that would be sick!

Yea, 6.0, 400hp and 6spd. No auto here, why'd you go with that red leather seats? Also there is no 07 GTO, 06 is the last year :)

Ok.

I'd rather have a stick shift Honda, than an automatic GTO.

Good question.

1. It comes stock, with this...
Image
220hp severely under-rated. Car beat 260hp Mustangs in its sleep before I touched anything on it.

2. 5spd trans

3. It does this... Stock
Image

4. Add one of these with a couple supporting mods..
Image

You have a 400+hp sleeper and a half for less than 5000$.

5. It doesn't look all that bad

Holy crap I had no idea it had a 24v. How much was the turbo kit? And is it RWD or FWD?

Well, few companies make turbo kits and the ones that do are way overpriced. My list looked like this...

Turbonetics T4 62-1 HIFI Turbocharger - 450$
Tial 38mm Wastegate - 200$
Random piping - 250$
Tweecer R/T (Laptop tuner) - 380$
Wideband o2 (For tuning) - 350$
Custom 3'' downpipe and exhaust - 250$
44 lb/hr fuel injectors - 50$ each x6
Misc couplers and fittings lines and random parts ~200$

Lots of time, blood, sweat, cussing, throwing stuff, and frustration to achieving my goal of over 400+whp along with the look on the face of the guy driving his modded Cobra after I destroy him - Priceless

I payed around ~2500$ for all my turbo needs. The cheapest actual kit that you can buy for a Taurus SHO is ~4000$. Much cheaper to just build your own kit.

Unfortunately the car is FWD, so traction has been a major issue. Along with the snapping of many driveline parts.

Yea man, that's awesome. Sucks that its FWD, but still awesome it can take down all that American muscle. How many RPMs can you drop the clutch and still have traction?

My next car will definitely be RWD, I'm done with FWD. :heh

In what gear? I lay into the throttle at 40mph in 2nd and see nothing but smoke coming from the wheel wells. 1st gear is a joke and utterly useless at this point. Gotta backpeddle the gas and shortshift to 2nd, then hope it holds some ground. But once it hits 3rd and can actually hold the road, my god.
