This topic has been taken over by gondee (:heh Thanks Granola!)

I guess the community has decided it's time to make On Tour smileys! I think that's cool, but I wanna create some ground rules so any smileys you guys want on the board will fit with the set we have now:

Here are the smileys I think are good enough now to pass muster:
  • Image Mac - by Titan
  • Image (Hobo) Nate - by Granola Hero
  • Image Sid - by Granola Hero
  • Image Skye - by Granola Hero
  • Image Psymon - by Granola Hero

The others must either have the standard face format or be cleaned up a little before I can accept them. :) Eventually I'll get in on creating the smileys but I wanna finish other stuff first.

Here are the simple rules -

1) Smileys can be no larger than 50x50. The PSD file I've created has a generic canvas size of 30x30, but you can enlarge it if you need to.

2. Smileys must continue the face style that DeeCee produced and all the smileys have. If they dont' have the basic face style, it won't make it on the board. That can be modified, of course - for example if the character has glasses or an eyepatch or whatever, you can put that in there no problem. And some variation is okay, so long as it's apparent it's from the same basic face that all the SSX smilies are produced from. You can also change skin color, eye color, face shape, as needed so long as it retains the look of the general "theme" of the smilies.

3. I reserve the right to make choices on what smilies go on the board and also to modify them graphically to fit the style as well. We can only have one smiley of each character from each game on the board, so no half a dozen Macs from SSX On Tour, just one. If one is made, turn your attention to one of the other ones that haven't been made. And no half a dozen variations of the same character, just produce a basic one for one game.

Here are the files you guys should use to produce them:

Basic face template:

and the PSD file:

I've included 3 different backgrounds to help you see how your smiley will look on different styles of the board. Black is the basic background for the default skin.

Okay guys, get to work! :)

The new game is upon us and it would be cool to see some OT smileys.
If you have made any show them off here in this thread.

This post contained some instructions on how to make a smiley using my template but gondee posted his and it's better, so to avoid confusion I just took mine down.

well after searching high and low for a smilie generator (smilie maker) whatever. i found there are none that will make a smilie like granola's or the mc.com character ones. the only smilie generators out there are for making basic variations on your normal yellow circle smilie. they are pretty lame to be honest!! not like granola's or Joni's, those are dope.

thanx for the good info Granola!! :china all i have to work with with is microsft picture it, but it still kinda worked!

here are my first 2 attempts at making smilies!!

:heh I like them so far, but I'm starting to worry about how many smilies we have...I think I might install a hack that organizes the smileys a little better before I put these on the board.

Also, in order for me to put a smiley on the board, it should be in the same format as the main ones that are on the board already. My recommendation would be to take someone like [mac] and just use his basic face, and base your smiley from there. Remember that it must look good on a black background, so be sure to make your basic background in PSP or PS is black, and work on it from there. In other words, there shouldn't be any white "halo" around the smiley.

A smiley is pretty much pixel art, in that you have to build it up close, but it must look good from far away. If you guys want me to post a tutorial, I'll gladly do it if I have time tonight. :) We should also try and strive to make these smileys better than the last ones - by having them animated. :yes

I like it, it looks cool! :yes If we put it on the board though, he wont' have a body. :no

Tyson sort of looks like a girl with pink hair though. :heh

Thu Sep 22, 2005 10:19 pm

oh i don't care if u lose the body! i just think it woud be cool if u actually used it!! i didn't think it was that great!! at least not compared to somethin' like the hobo nate smilie or one of those!! im glad u like it!! :china

Thu Sep 22, 2005 10:37 pm

Really man, it's got good shading on the hat and everything.

Hobo nate is good, but it doesn't use the format of the rest of the smilies I don't think. Unless it does, I can't use it on the board, I totally wouldn't mind if you used the standard face format created by DeeCee and just put all the shaggy hair and stuff around it.

Okay, here's the lowdown on smileys if you wanna create them so they can be used on the board. I've produced a few files that you guys can use to help you create smilies.

Okay, here's my revamp of Titan's Mac:

Image

As you can see, I cropped it and simplified the colors a tad, but it looks pretty good, doesn't it? I think it would look good on the board! :yes

I used gondee's template to change my Nate. Gondee, my Nate in the first post is set up pretty much the same way as your template except that I left it on indexed color instead of RGB.
OK so here is Hobo Nate's makeover
Before:

After:

The new eyes make him look a bit cross-eyed but I think all in all he's OK. I also defined his chin a little bit better so it doesn't blend in with his hair.

And here is the same thing on the blue background:

Sorry about the double post but it's for demonstration so I think it's justified.

EDIT TO ADD:

Okay here is Skye:

Animated (winking):
