so I decided to see if my copy of SSX worked yesterday. The last time I tried playing it it didn't work, which let me down. I think it was on my fat [launch] PS2 so that was probably why.

I probably hadn't played it since 2004 or 2005. If I wanted the original, I played Tricky. going back to having no ubers seemed like too big of a jump backwards

It worked obviously, and I was surprised by its distinct style. It's not a funkotronik party jamfest like Tricky. It takes itself a little more seriously and has a different thing going on.

Playing the original Pipedream was the shit. A lot better than the Tricky one. passing by all those cross shaped gates in the beginning brought back memories. a lot of tracks were changed a lot, playing them in their original form really made me nostalgic.

and then you have the addicting and ridiculously catchy music.

lyrics are off
intro song - "super SX despite the cold war goin downhill psssh rocks the keyboard"
and that jazzy tune that repeats the lyrics Eh for ba bo. eh for ba bo.

and lots more. Pipedream has this nice hip hop beat on it that I didn't remember.

I saw that my Kaori had a blue ring. Once I found out this was from having her trick book completed, I was on a mission. I went through the painstaking task of finishing every trick book. If you can recall, in the original the trick book can only be seen on the setup character screen, which makes completing it a bitch. I wrote down the tricks in a notebook Morse code style and went to work. and finished them. All of them. It's a good thing I really like doing trick books.

I finished and then went to work getting JP, Zoe, and Hiro their last boards. There were a few medals missing, which included getting Gold with Hiro on Mesablanca. :heh

but it only took a few tries.

so it was nice to have that feeling of accomplishment. All those blue rings are damn sexy.

and who could forget

What would your mother think?
If your mother only knew...
Riding cool and confident.
Bronze those thumbs!
50-50 Rail!

The lack of ubers didn't even matter. Tricks were still full of style.

Having the characters as they first were and the two that were never seen again was nice too. Hiro made some bizarre noises that I didn't remember him making before though.

Basically every character in the first game was worth keeping. quality

I probably still don't know half of the shortcuts in the game. Going through Pipedream again I was amazed at all the shit I still don't know how to get to. I still don't know where that magical button is. I still haven't gone into the caves of Untracked. I don't think I've seen the Tokyo shortcut the game hints at. I still haven't seen the subway in Mercury City. The game is so deep.

rest in peace Running Man and Warmup mode

I felt like I just had to post something. :fro

I often put in SSX or Tricky to see what the developers used in the UI, and I'm always amazed by the sense of style that SSX has. It's just so damn cool - I wish the other games tried to be a little more "stylish" while not being loud. SSX's cool disposition is what still makes it fun to play.

Played again today. Mainly Pipedream. I found that button 90s style without a guide or anything. It took like 10 runs but I found it. I knew when I saw it that it was it, even though it looks more like a Tony Hawk tag than a button. haha

but I couldn't find what it did or opened. :heh

and on Snowdream I heard another jam

dope beat rockin
dope beat rockin
dope beat rockin
rock with me
ddddddddddope bbbbbbbbbbeat

I'm really looking forward to getting a new desktop. I'll be sure to play not only every major classic from the PS2 era on the available emulator, but also SSX, the original that started it all. When I think about it I know it's just gonna be awesome to play it again. And I won't even have to stare at blocky graphics thanks to the emulator's improvements.

surprize packidge :)

yeah there was something that SSX 1 had that tricky didnt had maybe those one timer punchlines just had so much more style than some of the ones in tricky
like the intro was awesome some of the quotes in there were amazing like
Zoe- you know if you would just relax loosing would be alot easier to take/handle
JP - Geh do la feh (idk)
Moby- you lookin at a winna baby (better than tricky
Jurgen- huh huh huh huh huh
Kaoris was awesome too but I cant remember

but yeah SSX 1's style was alot more chill and cool tricky had flair and exitement

I find your praise on the lyrics a bit odd because Tricky had most of the songs SSX had, along with the Rahzel quotes. My favourite one (from Tricky and SSX, of course), is "Call your mamma in the room and tell her how great you are!". I called out to mine when i first heard that.

"What?"
"Nevermind..."

I went into the Pipedream button secret..

about as pointless as this one

Image

Plus, how could somebody know that they had to go into the left bowl into an invisible hole if they were playing "90s style"

but at least now I know everything there is to know on Pipedream. (or at least think I do)

Mercury City is so full of bizarre secrets, it's just absurd. I don't think I'll see half of that map before I die. haha

I love Tricky...it was the first one I got into, so that may be some of it. I've never even seen a copy of the original SSX anywhere....if I ever see it on PS2 I might grab it (if my PS2 still works, that is...geez, haven't played that thing in so long.)

SSX 3 I have a harder time getting into. It just doesn't do it for me. The graphics don't seem as cool. Psymon went from being a neat crazy psychopath to just being mean and nasty. (Although I have to admit I like Allegra in SSX3. And, OK, Nate is pretty cool.) The only thing SSX 3 really had going for it was being able to be the Yeti. Or the cow. Or the beaver. Or (my husband's personal favorite) the skeleton. :pimp.

Just MHO.

No. I was just commenting that I haven't played SSX1 and would like to find a copy. Currently my fave is Tricky. I play SSX3 some...but eh.
The characters I mentioned are from SSX3.

ah I was just kidding with you :P you should really pick up SSX1 if you liked Tricky. It's not quite as colorful or as active as its sequel, but I believe SSX1 has the most personality and gameplay out of the entire series [yeti]

Heh..sorry, missed the sarcasm. There is one person on here who has been chewing my ass out over one comment I made the first day I joined, so I guess I'm a bit gunshy. I always go back and re-read what I've written and what others have written to make sure it's in context.

I found the exit to that tunnel and rode backwards up past two fans before being unable to continue, and I hit the button-thing, but never did I even come close to finding that secret entrance. That seems more like a purposeful glitch than something the developers wanted people to actually find and enjoy.

Man. SSX is hard.

I only started playing it weeks before SSX 2012 released, so I don't have the nostalgia, but man, I really appreciate how difficult this game is.

I'm struggling to get Gold on every Race track in World Tour. I am using Kaori, but still. Tricky was never this challenging.

It would have been nice if the games since had been a bit more difficult.

SSX doesn't hold your hand. :no No trick correction, hard to get snowflakes, etc. No ubers! But at the time it came out, man, so amazing. As the series went along, more and more hand-holding was introduced, but as far as purists are concerned, there isn't anything better than the first SSX. :yes
